Google Webmaster Hangout Notes: September 20th 2016

google webmaster hangouts recaps - SEO tips

Notes from the Google Webmaster Hangouts on the 20th of September, 2016.

Sitemaps only Valid for their Sub-directory

Sitemaps located in a sub-directory only be valid for URLs in that sub-directory.

Search Console Sitemap Indexing Reports Exact URLs

Search Console indexed pages in Sitemaps uses exact URLs, so variations including www/non-www, trailing slash variations, etc, won’t be reported as indexed.

Add your CDN to Search Console

If you are using a CDN, you can add this to Search Console.

Canonical Works Across Domains

A canonical tag on content shared on another domain should consolidate backlink authority on the original URL.

Multiple Links on a Page Count Once for PageRank

Multiple links from one page to another are only counted once for PageRank, even if the anchor text is different. John is vague on the impact of the separate anchor text.

Don’t Use Aggregate Review on Category Pages

Aggregate review markup should be applied to one specific item, so shouldn’t be used on category pages.

Canonicalised Pages will Initially be Indexed

Canonicalised pages will be crawled, indexed, and then the canonical will be processed.

Google Cache Shows Un-rendered HTML

Google cached shows the raw un-rendered HTML.
